The Box by Danielle Durchlag & Anne Mourier

In The Box, a two-person, multi-media art exhibition, artists Anne Mourier and Danielle Durchslag present a visual, feminist conversation about their faiths of origin. Raised Catholic and Jewish, respectively, both artists use a range of mediums to explore the complications, complexities, and confusions present in these patriarchal faiths.

Rather than embrace the binary-driven approach of so much contemporary critical discourse, Durchslag and Mourier make work that embraces nuance. The pieces on display here do directly and clearly critique Jewish and Christian sexism. Simultaneously, they celebrate, honor, and playfully engage with these ancient, resonant, ongoing belief systems. This non-binary approach is what Mourier, in her practice, calls, “the feminine archetype,” a sacred method of operating beyond the traditional, masculinity-driven confines of either/or.

That feminist spirit imbues every aspect of The Box, from the works on view to the artists’ approach to collaboration. The design of the physical space, the new objects crafted by each artist for this show, the scent created for the exhibition, and even the words you’re reading now, emerge from a divinely feminine, truly shared, approach to creation.
