Experiencing Round-Naved Churches of Medieval England with Catherine Hundley

What was it really like to be part of the medieval English church—and how can we know? While the vast majority of twelfth- and thirteenth-century English churches were rectangular or cruciform, a small number featured round naves in commemoration of the Anastasis Rotunda of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem—the site traditionally associated with Jesus’s resurrection and empty tomb. By investigating the communities and contexts of these evocative structures, this talk offers a methodology for understanding medieval architectural experience through analysis of an uncommon building form.

This free event will take place in Wesley’s Elderdice Hall. All are welcome!
