About Out of Our Comfort Zone

2020 was a year unlike any other. Between the pandemic, social unrest, the US presidential election and extended quarantines, how we experienced and now reflect on that year are unique. Although we could not visit physical art exhibitions, two separate projects emerged: Home Alone Together and All We HaveThese virtual exhibitions allowed artists and individuals to reflect on their experience during the pandemic either through photography or audio interviews. Out of Our Comfort Zone grew out of these two projects as we were inspired by the interactions and encouraged to experience them in a new way.

Home Alone Together and All We Have were both organized chronologically—they released new interviews, videos, and photographs at regular intervals. All We Have was grouped by individual artist, while Home Alone Together was grouped by artists and their subject locations within their homes. As we designed Out of Our Comfort Zone, we wanted to provide viewers with a completely unique experience despite the work being present in other projects. Thus, our four categories of ExposureImmersion, Reflection, and Closure emerged. While all of the photographs included here are from the same time period, they are not displayed chronologically. Instead, we interpreted them as individual works portraying consistent themes that emerged during 2020.
