Exhibition launch for Tobi Kahn’s Formation: Images of the Body

The Luce Center is thrilled to welcome artist Tobi Kahn for a very special launch of his dynamic solo exhibition, Formation: Images of the Body, on display in the Dadian Gallery and Seminary Board Room through the summer. Join us on Sunday, May 8, for an afternoon viewing with the artist and other special guests. Light refreshments will be served; all are welcome!

About the show:

Tobi Kahn is one of the country’s foremost painters, known for his multivalent abstractions. This is the first exhibition of a new series in which he takes up the human figure for the first time in more than thirty years, revealing its sacred potential. At a time of staggering death, illness, and anxiety over basic needs, Kahn’s figures offer a hopeful vision for the future, when we can embrace one another, and indeed life itself, with renewed appreciation.

Kahn’s show is now open for a virtual tour and is accompanied by a short film by director Susan Dryfoos, reflecting on her long friendship with the artist and the journey he undertook to create the paintings in Formation.

The catalogue for the exhibition features reflections by the artist and curator, an essay by renowned French academic and commentator Dr. Annie Cohen-Solal, and a poem by writer Nessa Rapoport. It is available now as an e-book, and can be purchased in hard copy when the live exhibition opens.

Immediately prior to the exhibition launch, the Luce Center’s Dr. Aaron Rosen will be leading a panel discussion with the artist at the nearby Phillips Collection, which has a stunning, recently expanded collection of Kahn’s work. Visit the designated section of our events page for more information.
