Panel Discussion: Rage of the Matriarchs with Artist Gabriella Boros

Join us for an evening panel with artist Gabriella Boros in conversation with Dr. Aaron Rosen and Jonathan Homrighausen about her series, “Rage of the Matriarchs” (currently on display at the Luce Center).

About the Series

The matriarchs of the Bible had contemporary rage. They suffered from infertility, jealousy, isolation and underappreciation. They were traded, humiliated and ignored. As seen through a modern lens, we can relate to them as examples of fortitude. They came from a world of nomadic movement and migration. Their skies are rendered as embroidery patterns which represent the indigenous region. Each woman has a unique pattern and a hand-colored flower, native to the Middle East, to mitigate her rage. The flowers are their inner souls, colorful and still blooming with beauty. Each represents some aspect of her psychological fury.

About the artist

Gabriella Boros was born in Jerusalem, Israel to Holocaust survivors. The family moved to the US for her father’s post-doctoral studies and settled in the States.

A graduate of the University of Michigan School of Art, Gabriella has exhibited her woodblock prints nationally and internationally. She has completed two artist residencies and is the recipient of a State of Illinois Artist Grant. She has been chosen to participate in two fellowships, the Spertus Museum’s Midwest Artist Lab and as an Artist Week Fellow by the Amen Institute. She has exhibited nationally and internationally since 1986. Her work is included in many private collections. Her handmade book Esh: Sanctity in Fire was aquired for the permanent collection of the University of Michigan Special Collections.

Her themes include Judaic commentary and the intersection of plants and humans. Most of her prints are created as series, with a theme, which she researches and develops into a visual narrative.
